Haven’t Been to the Dentist in Years? Here’s What to Expect at Your First Visit
Many adults put off routine dental care due to busy schedules or anxiety. But it’s never too late to get your oral health back on track. Learn exactly what to expect at your first visit back if it's been a while since your last checkup.

If it’s been a while since your last dental checkup, you aren’t alone. Research shows that nearly 30% of adults haven’t visited the dentist in over a year, while about one in 10 say they don’t plan on visiting a dentist in the next year either.

Although it can be tempting to push oral healthcare to the back burner due to cost concerns, anxiety, or an overly busy schedule, going a year or more without treatment can increase your risk of serious issues, including cavities and gum disease.

At Family Dental Group, with offices in Gardner, Northborough, and Paxton, Massachusetts, Nikhil Lavana, DMD, Archana Kharkanis-Lavana, DMD, and our team understand that oral healthcare isn’t always a top priority. Even so, we encourage all adults to make it a regular practice.

Here, we explain how to schedule your next appointment and what to expect, so you can go into the visit with confidence and peace of mind.

Scheduling your next dental exam: What to know ahead of time

We make it easy to schedule dental appointments via phone or online on our website. Whichever option you choose, it’s important to gather the following information:

  • Dental records from your previous practice or the practice’s contact information
  • A list of the medications and supplements you regularly take
  • Any pain, sensitivity, or other concerns you’re experiencing
  • Dental insurance information (if you use it)

This info helps us get a complete picture of your general and dental health, so we can serve you as quickly and comprehensively as possible.

Because many new patients have put off dental treatment for a year or longer, we typically set aside at least 45 minutes for these visits. This gives us plenty of time to ask questions, complete a comprehensive exam, and tailor your treatment.

What to expect during your first visit back

Visiting the dentist after a year or more away can be intimidating, but it’s a straightforward process. Here’s what to expect:

Initial conversation

Upon your arrival, we review your medical and dental history, ask how long it's been since your last checkup, and see if you have any specific concerns, such as jaw pain or tooth sensitivity, that you’d like to address. Share anything that you can think of. We’re nonjudgmental, and our goal is simply to help you.

Dental exam

Next, we complete a comprehensive exam. This involves checking your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw for issues such as cavities, inflammation, misalignments, or oral cancer. Some issues, like severe gum disease, can be identified during a visual exam, but if we suspect deep decay or bone loss, we may also take dental X-rays. Thanks to modern imaging technology, this process is quick, noninvasive, and pain-free.

Cleaning

We complete your new patient exam by cleaning your teeth. A dental hygienist or other qualified staff member gently removes plaque from your teeth and underneath your gums. Afterward, they floss and polish your teeth and provide personalized care instructions.

What if my exam uncovers cavities or other dental issues?

Sometimes, during new patient exams, we uncover underlying dental concerns, such as gum disease or cavities. This can be worrisome, but there’s no need to panic; these issues often don’t have to be fixed all at once.

We review our findings with you in easy-to-understand terms. Then, we create a custom treatment plan that aligns with your schedule and budget. Our goal is to put you in control of your care. We’re here to support you and keep your mouth healthy.
